Just starting out

I am just starting out, and would like some advice to some first purchases and am planning to make. First off this will be my first rc quadcopter or any flying aircraft for that matter. I am looking to purchase a BTF system. First for some training and getting used to plying I was looking at the Blade 180 qx BTF and the Spectrum DX6i transmitter. Thinking that by spending my money on a transmitter that can be used if and when I upgrade to maybe the 350 QX soe something in that line. Am I thinking relatively in the right way?
Any suggestions would be helpful.

This is definitely a good strategy. I always give the advice that when you're starting out, you should spend money on good equipment that stays on the ground (transmitter, FPV goggles if you fly FPV, etc.). That way it can grow with you as you move up in the aircraft you're flying. Also, if you don't like the hobby, you can sell these things much more easily because they will get much less wear and tear.

As for anything that will be in the air, start small and also make sure you get something that has replacement parts available. Even if you don't crash (which most people will), you will almost certainly have enough hard landings to break something over time.

I would like to build a quadcopter. Im a Mercedes Benz Technician with good soldering and electrical skills. When I look up parts it always seems to direct me to HobbyKing (ie. myfirstdrone.com awesome website but expensive shipping). I live in Texas and man, the shipping looks crazy to order from there, any other options? So ready to get started but I don't want to start off the wrong way. Also, I do have some intermediate, self taught rc plane experience. I just want to experience the cool quad/drone stuff! Thanks in advance!!
