Any ideas. I was looking at the DJI Flamewheel 450. Has anyone built this before? If so what was the rough cost? Also do you have any suggestions of any other starter kits. I really want to mount my go pro so i can be along for the ride.

Thanks,
Jared

Im mainly needing assistance in finding any advice on battery/motor/prop combos for efficient flight would be most welcome. Also finding a decent transmitter.

Hello,

Good news - DJI F450/ clone 450 builds are very common, so you should have no issues finding a good guide on this. You can build something decent for under $300 with a transmitter/receiver, but you'll have to be careful to find the best shipping rates, etc. to make sure you don't go over budget. Most of this stuff ships directly from China.

Oddcopter has a very good (and up to date) series on how to build an inexpensive, solid quadcopter. He uses a different frame, but you could easily use the F450 instead.

If you have the money, you should invest in a better tx/rx. You're not going to crash your transmitter since it's on the ground with you, so I always advise buying the best one you can from the beginning. It will grow with you as you build better copters.

Spektrum DX6i is very good for the money.

If you're looking to spend a little less, you can get a Turnigy 9xr. I actually just bought one recently and have it on the way. Once I get it, I'll be able to update you on it. If you get it, I'd suggest buying a programming module to reflash it with er9x, which is better firmware than what it comes with stock.

A bit of caution - it's almost worth it to get the DX6i to start because it will grow with you and it's very high quality. I have one of those, but I also have a Turnigy 9x, which is similar to the 9xr. The 9x with default code had a bug that cause my copter to go almost full throttle into my ceiling when I turned off the tx. Once I got new modules (frsky modules) and reflashed it with er9x, it was a decent radio, but then I realized that the contacts on the gimbals behind the sticks wore out with only a few uses. My throttle stick wouldn't go to 0 (-100) unless I pulled it down really fast. This made it a pain to land sometimes. So really, the 9x was $60 + the frsky tx module and rx module + a board to program it with USB + a programmer + miscellaneous other stuff... and now I don't care much to use it. The DX6i was $200 at a time, so it was still cheaper... but now that the DX6i is $140 on sale everywhere, it's probably the best bet.

HobbyKing sells replacement gimbals for the 9xr and it comes with a port to plug in to program it already, so I thought it would be worth a shot as I'm trying to find a good cheap radio to recommend. The other good thing is that it doesn't come with a tx/rx module, so it's a bit cheaper and offsets the cost of getting better frsky modules by about 10 bucks. If this one doesn't work out, I may order and test out the OrangeRC stuff from them to see how it is.

There are also others out there, but none I have experience with. Another good idea might be to get something used on Ebay, but then you never know what you're getting.

Hey, Thanks again. Much appreciated. I think i may just go with the DX6i. How is the programming with that device? Complex? I'm new to RC so i know there will be somewhat of a learning curve.

HI Jared L, its very easy, you set up as a plane, with most setting disabled the quad fc board will do all the work, all you may have to do is put some expo on the sticks, but that depends on the board the kk has stick scaling which is like expo ( expo is like making the sticks softer in the middle so you dont over control what your flying ) if you need help with things just ask, if i can put a video on here to help you i will mate , we all had to start at the start so dont ever think is a stupid question just ask

Hi Jared i have the 450 flame wheel cost with out trans and receiver was about £200, but i used good parts but not the best or it would had been £350-£400
