Fly Aways

I own two quads and a hex and have been flying for a year. I try to keep up with the news and watch CraigsList postings for good deals.
It is apparent that there is a significant "flyaway" problem with some commercially available quads. There is seldom a week that goes by without someone posting an add looking for a quad. Obviously, I don't want this to happen. I don't want to lose my equipment or accidentally hurt someone. My question is simple. Is anything being done about this problem? Is there something I can do to avoid it?

Hi mate sorry to say its not always the quad , some of the problem is not setting up right and no pre flight checks being done , there was a video on you tube of a guy who has no GPS lock on his phantom , so he still took off and lost in on to a main road nearly hitting a lady on a bike who was riding up the road , It does not mater what you fly , if its not working at 100% DONT fly it , if you cant set it up Dont fly it till you can
Due to more people now coming into the hobby with RTF quads, planes ,helicopters , the know how of the hobby they have not mastered yet, we all started some where in the hobby , you have been flying for 2 years and will know more about quads then when you started
This what the forums are about trying to pass the know how to new people, in some parts of the world you need to prove you know about what your flying and can fly it before you can be passed as a safe flier and get your wings ( like New Zealand )

Holtnell....I agree. I know that some don't do adequate pre-flight. But, I personally watched one that was locked-on and well in range, just take off. I also know that the number of reports of flyaways leads me to believe this is more than just "pilot error." Honestly, I don't have an axe to grind but I do want to begin to highlight a significant potential problem

Hi Ted i think the only way to look at it if its 2 run away in 1000 quads its still 2 too many but its not bad , the main thing is to have the fail safe set up right and GPS locked on with return home active , there was one on you tube even tho the guy lost the Phantom the auto return home kick in and it did come back , where a lot of people go wrong is it the quad has a range of 2 miles thats on flat ground put hills and buildings in the way and signal is lost

I did see that video and imagine those radio towers might have something to do with that incident.
Perhaps we can use this thread to capture reports of fly aways so we can sort out the potential problems and reinforce some of the pre-flight checks that will help prevent them.
