F450 First Build - Process Thread

Currently Building a F450
Hi Everyone, for Christmas my partner bought me the parts to build my first quadcopter as I mentioned it several months ago. I am super excited but do require help along the way as the parts I have do not match up with some videos I have been watching.

I will update this thread while I am building the F450 and will update with questions and answers. Hopefully this will help others in my position.

Video guide I am using.

So all the parts were bought as a pack from here. They consist of the following parts with images and questions included (when answering these questions can you include the number so it is easy to track):
  • Frame - F450 quadcopter frame with controller protection board
  • Motors - 4x A2212 1000KV
Question 1) The screws that came with the motors do not fit the arms, I tried the other screws that came with the kit but they do not fit the motor either (even though they are the screws shown in the picture here). Should I just buy longer screws that will fit?
  • Speed Controllers - 4x 40A ESC
Question 2) These connections are slightly different then the ones I have seen in guides where it looks like I need to manually create the plugs. I am guessing these golden plug type things are what I need to solder the wires? Also does it matter what ones I plug into each other, will it blow the board this way? I know that the plugs are dependent what direction the motors spin so I was going to connect everything and get it right by just plugging them in at the end...
  • Propellers - 4 pairs 1045
Question 3) These do not look durable, which is why I am guessing the came with extra pairs, is this important?
  • Controller Module - MWC 2.5
  • Distribution Board - HJ v1.0
Question 4) The controller fits over the distribution board perfectly but has not come with any screws to fit them together. Would a small screw and nut be the best thing to do this or velcro? Or looking at the guide linked earlier do I need the controller module at all, can I just power the board directly?
  • Battery - GE Power RC Pack - 11.1v 2200MAH 25C Lipo
Question 5) Is there any estimate to how long this battery would last?
  • Battery Charger - B3 AC
I need to get a UK adapter for this
  • Battery Strap - Wtotoy.com
  • Radio Control - FS-T6 (6 channels, 2.40-2.48GHz)
Question 6) Has anyone got a guide to setup the receiver for a quadcopter? Also how and where is to install the receiver?
  • Landing Gear Kit

My build step by step:
  1. Put together landing gear (easiest part)
  2. Screw motors to the arms (waiting on question 1)
  3. Solder the speed controllers into the plugs (waiting on questions 2)
  4. Solder speed controllers to F450 board (make wires smaller if needed)
  5. Solder a red and black power cable to the F450 board (dependent on question 4)
  6. Screw arms to the F450 board (bottom of the arm to the main board)
  7. Propellers could be added on here or at the end of the build
  8. Tie wrap the speed controllers to the arms
  9. Optional - connect landing gear to bottom F450 board
  10. Connect the controller module and the distribution board onto the F450 board (waiting on question 4)
  11. Connect wires to controller module
  12. Connect receiver to the bottom F450 board and connect to controller module
  13. Connect the top F450 board to the top of the arms
  14. Place battery velcro around the top F450 board
  15. Connect radio controller with receiver
  16. Calibrate, test and fly

Finished build should look something like this:

Future additions:
  1. GPS
  2. Lights
  3. Camera / FPV

I know there are many questions so I thank everyone in advance.

Hi mate i will do it step by step 1 yes your need to buy new screws this is normal as the screws it comes with is to mount to the cross plate is has this then mounts to a plane . 2 ESC ok make sure the power leads are right way round , the 3 leads that go to the motor you may need to swap 2 wire around to get motor to run the way you need it CW or CCW , i dont use connectors i solder 1 wire then temp join the other 2 and see what way motor turns if its right then i solder all the wires with heat shrink over the joint. 3 no your right they will snap the carbon fibre are better but just to learn on they will do as your going to crash alot thats normal. 4 hobby king do plastic posts and plastic screws to mount the FCB etc PLEASE DONT USE METAL it will short out and the FCB is be a bin job ,use these

5 keep it light on them motors and props about 10 mins my boy gets from his , his is the same set up as the one your making
6 the transmitter is set up as an aero just uses 4 channels the receiver will mount on the side plate look at your pic there is a flat plate that sticks out of the side put it on there , Dont forget servo link leads so you can connect the receiver to the FCB
UPDATE saves me retyping it the battery will not be man enough to fly quad with a camera lights etc , your need to look at 4000mah min or the 10 mins flight time will be about 3 mins , 10 mins is just the 450 frame no extra weight , also as your going for a camera get carbon props the plastic ones are no good
I dont know if you have every flown before i will take it no, If i was you i would build it just as a 450 quad flame wheel got to where you can fly and control it , Then fit legs and camera mount , Check balance of quad as the camera will make it nose heavy so battery will need to be moved backwards too balance it , Flying it as in the pic if you crash it will do a lot of damage to the quad , and dont forget the camera is right up front
I dont mean to be hard on you we all started some where and we all crashed my first 450 had 6 new arms they come down fast and hard
