Almost had a fly away

So I'm flying my Turbo Ace X-830 (without FPV) and it got too far away and I got all twisted up and couldn't tell if it was going away or coming towards me. Then I started stressing out and just kept making it worse and worse. After about a half mile I said screw it and just cut the throttle so it would land. It landed in a Law Offices parking lot and lucky for me it didn't hit a Lawyers car (or anything else) lol. I frantically searched and asked everyone I saw if they had seen it go down. I thought it landed in a small lake but it went much further and a guy working on a dock saw it go down and he pointed the way. A groundskeeper found it and brought it to me. I was worried I would never see my go pro again, as for the quad I only suffered 2 bent arms and bent landing gear. I can't believe it never even occurred to me to go to fail safe mode. It was amazing how fast I got nutted up and couldn't figure out which way I was going. By the time it was a half mile away it was hopeless. Pretty bad flying all around on my part but this is how we learn. Lucky to have gotten it back.

Thats weird, I have almost exactly the same thing happening to me.

Last weekent the skies were blue and there was almost no wind. So I thought it was a very good occasion to go and fly my FPV quad.
Charged my two 4000 Mah 4S batteries, hooked up my FatShark Predator and took off. Marvellous flight!

Until... it start to go too far and I lost orientation until my MX-20 radio started to beep (low on signal). I started look around where I was. But I just could find the way back. I did not see anything out of my FatShark neither. Until my girlfriend said: "why don't you activate the RTH function". I thought "sh.. why did I not think of that". Turned off the Tx to activate fail-safe. It hit a tree when it came back. Well there is my luck!
