3D flight discussion

YES only collective pitch ones do , Min size is 450 but this is still a hand full 500 and above are better , the problem with the wind is on a quad is it will give the props more lift but as they are fixed at a pitch you can reduce the lift, so you kill the throttle but you can only reduce so far if you stop the motors the quad will flip over , so your stuck in a hover till wind drops off or you have to try and dive down in forward flight to reduce height
A Cp Heli in 3D mode will run -15 to +15 degs of pitch , in normal flight we run -2 to +12 degs so we have loads of neg pitch to pull heli down to the ground

Sounds like another reason to switch to variable pitch for quads haha. I do notice that my quad would climb a lot when the wind blows, thanks for that tidbit of information. I am seeing that variable pitch seems to have many advantages over fixed pitch. I may be looking into designing a cheaper way to variable pitch props when I get a chance (winter when flying is not as fun :) ).

HI George, Curtis youngblood made the first variable pitch quad the stingray which Hobby king has now cloned its a 500 size watch this for flying

I probably won't be getting one soon, I'd prefer to improve my current build with my money :). After my flying gets better I'll probably get one though haha. The Goblin 630 is really impressive, I understand how 3D works on a quadcopter, but how does it work on a heli? The thing appears to be able to do anything, or fly any way haha. I thought all helis had variable pitch rotors, is it just the amount of pitch allowed?

Hi George there are 3 type of helis , coaxle these have 2 sets of blades one goes CW and one CCW , tail motor pushes and pulls heli( wont fly in any wind)
Then there are Fixed pitch these have a main rotor set at 45 deg with a fly bar to balance the rotor, control is with throttle to adjust head speed to to gain height and 2 cyclic servos the swash is fixed where a pitch servo would be ( will fly in very light wind)
Then there are the real heli the CP ( collective pitch ) this has a variable pitch main and tail blades , 3 servos on the swash to control elev, aile, pitch
then a high speed tail servo
There are different ways to fly scale with has a fixed head speed of about 1900 on a 500 class the control is all done by cyclic and pitch and has pitch range of -3,0,5,8,10
Then there is 3D still has fixed head speed but this time its about 2300 and has pitch range of -12 to +12 zero is at mid stick this is were you hover the right way up or inverted , When your inverted the to climb you pull throttle collective down all controls are backwards
Then the last is sport flying the same fixed throttle at about 2000 to 2300 but pitch range is -8 to +12 sport is loops rolls not full 3D
In quads 3D is called hotdog ,but the china flood of quads use the word 3D as it can fly upside down ,A variable pitch quad should be able to do what a cp heli can as you have a cp heli on each corner , If you want to Know how the full workings of a cp in video form let me know its amazing how the thing works
watch this the 800 class is over 6 feet nose to tail blades
This goblin holds a speed record 155 mph

Have there ever been any full scale/manned 3D helis? That would be terrifying to fly haha. THanks for the information, I have never been into helis so all of this was new to me. A heli going at 155mph, that is much faster than I expect out of many R/C planes haha.

Haha, I've seen the last video, and a few where people have put model rocket engines on planes (Flitetest did a couple good one s like that too), but the stunt chopper was really great haha. How would you like to be in that when he did those rolls and stuff xD.
