Problems with First Quad Build, Can't Take Off Without Full Throttle

Thanks for the idea, I'll have to ponder for a while... I have a few spare nano's lying about, it wouldn't be hard to add it into the circuit to monitor things.

Problems with First Quad Build, Can't Take Off Without Full Throttle

Fair enough, I've heard of fly-aways and it sounds pretty frustrating, can't really do much when it happens except for watch... I wonder if I can wire in some sort of kill switch? The receiver does have an led to say whether it can see the Transmitter. I might be able to dodgy up a relay that...

Problems with First Quad Build, Can't Take Off Without Full Throttle

I have a cheap FlySky FS-CT6B Transmitter and a FlySky FS-R6B receiver. Similar to this one. I would have thought it would have a fail safe too... I do notice that if you turn the Transmitter on and off I get errors on the KK2.1, I would have thought that it would be okay.

Problems with First Quad Build, Can't Take Off Without Full Throttle

Thanks for the advice Holtneil, I have just re-flashed with steveis1.8s1pro. Just gotta wait a few days until I'm home in daylight to test it again =-D On a side note. Turns out my crash totalled a motor too, shaft was bent a bit causing some vibration so I replaced it. Also some advice for...

    Motor Mt. screws

Yes if your motor only draws 14-18Amps you'll want a 30A ESC, I wouldn't go any smaller. A 30A ESC will only be able to deliver a maximum of 30A continuous. Typically they can peak higher for short durations depending on the ESC. Typically you'll want to run your ESCs well below their rating...

    Motor Mt. screws

I think most motors use standard 5mm hex head bolts. Whatever the standard M5 thread pitch is what they'll use (ref: I have A2212 motors also) As for which motor is more powerful, the answer is neither. The KV rating roughly refers to how fast in rpm the motor spins per volt of battery voltage...

Battery C rate, and what it means

Can I also add that: Higher C rating typically = Heavier battery (i.e. lower AWG (e.g. larger diameter) cables needed, heavier battery cells). Lower C rating typically = Lighter battery So generally going to a high C battery (i.e. 70C) is not always the best choice if your Quad only draws a...

Problems with First Quad Build, Can't Take Off Without Full Throttle

Nice, you'll have to let me know how yours goes! I took my Quad up for it's maiden flight, works awesome!! Had my first crash too, had the quad up-side-down and didn't correct in time before the ground rudely interrupted my fun. Luckily only an arm broke and I've got spares. Still needs tuning...

    building my first quadcopter(=

Have you seen this guy from Hobby King? It's an F250 also: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__52863__HobbyKing_Spec_FPV250_V2_Quad_Copter_ARF_Combo_Kit_Mini_Sized_FPV_Multi_Rotor_ARF_.html It's a pretty sweet setup for the price and flys well (my mate has one). I'd recommend either...

Problems with First Quad Build, Can't Take Off Without Full Throttle

Also a word of caution, don't go randomly flashing your ESC with whatever hex file, you need to be 100% sure the picture of your ESC matches the pictures in the links above exactly! Any difference at all at you could blow up your ESC and possibly your battery if you don't have another power...

Problems with First Quad Build, Can't Take Off Without Full Throttle

I probably should tell everyone exactly what I did for anyone in the same boat. I bought a USBAsp from ebay, in circuit programmer for the ESCs from HobbyKing, and a 10-6pin adapter from ebay for the KK2.1. I downloaded the latest SimonK firmware (tgy-master.zip, see Download as Zip button on...

Problems with First Quad Build, Can't Take Off Without Full Throttle

It flies!!!! Quite well too! Turns out one of the props was spinning backwards. Just changed the motor direction in the SimonK firmware, recompiled and flashed and everything is sweet! :-) Didn't use a VM or Wine, the kkMulticopterFlashTool runs on Java so I guess it's kinda the same as...

Problems with First Quad Build, Can't Take Off Without Full Throttle

Okay!!! I got all four ESCs flashed with SimonK firmware with avrdude. Super easy on linux, I just ran 'make all', then used avrdude like this 'avrdude -c usbasp -p m8 -U flash:w:tgy.hex'. Worked awesomely!! It's a huge difference from stock firmware. In hind sight I should have used...

Problems with First Quad Build, Can't Take Off Without Full Throttle

Thanks for the info, I think I better cool my spending until the rest of the stuff that I've ordered comes in. I've got a USB programmer, and 12" props coming, the USB programmer should be here any day now.

Problems with First Quad Build, Can't Take Off Without Full Throttle

Wow, that's an impressive difference. I've got a bit more confidence now that flashing the ESCs might actually fix most of my issues. I almost bought some 2212 1000kV motors the other day, I told myself to stop buying stuff until I have flashed everything, I've already bought enough for about...

Problems with First Quad Build, Can't Take Off Without Full Throttle

Also is the KV rating really that sensitive that a 1000KV motor will work with a 10" x 4.5" prop and a 930kV won't? I didn't know that was the case...

Problems with First Quad Build, Can't Take Off Without Full Throttle

Hmm, 12" is pushing it but I might be able to fit them. It might be easier for me to get 1000kV motors though since I'd prefer agility over stability (I've heard big props can be sluggish at accelerating). My motors are cheap ebay A2212 930kv (I think they are knock offs of another brand...)...

Problems with First Quad Build, Can't Take Off Without Full Throttle

Nobody has any suggestions? Are 930kV motors on a 3S Lipo battery fast enough for 10" x 4.5" props? I was thinking of getting 1200kV motors to see if that helps things. In a few weeks I'll have flashed my ESCs with SimonK firmware and have the latest KK2.1 firmware (like I said, waiting on...
