This morning, we had some calm air for a change, so I took my Tarot 650 Sport out to the field for an endurance flight test. This is a large copter, weighing around 3KG and powered by a 6000 mAH 6S lipo. I've estimated my expected endurance time, given current draw for mid throttle setting and lipo capacity but wanted to see what I could actually expect on a cool morning under no wind conditions.
The plan was to fully charge the lipo, take off, retract the landing gear and put it into Circle mode and have it fly in a circle continuously until the voltage failsafe kicked in and triggered RTL - I would stop the clock when it landed.
In addition, I decided to fully charge my small 450 mAH 3S lipo which I use to power the gimbal and vtx - wanted to see if the battery would supply power long enough for the flight. I did not record the flight on the GoPro, just turned it on so I could view the video on my monitor.
After taking off, retracting the landing gear and switching to Circle mode, the aircraft began to wobble as the motors seem to surge and drop off.. it spooked me so bad that I lowered the landing gear and took over manually. As I let it hover the motors seemed to run much more smoothly, so I put it back in Circle mode. Once again, the surge/drop off cycle continued, but not as bad. Still, it remained until the failsafe kicked in and the aircraft returned and descended for a landing - the motors seemed to be fine during this phase of the flight.
BTW, I got just over 11 minutes flight time - according to the log, the failsafe tripped around 10:40 and I disarmed the motors around 11:15.
So, I'm extremely concerned about this behavior. I had a modified Elev-8 mysteriously become unstable and fall out of the sky, completely destroying itself in the crash; it too was using a 6S lipo (16000 mAH), and the same T-Motor MN3620 motors. I don't want to have this happen again!
So, has anybody experienced any motor surge issues while flying?
