OK...... So first let me say thanks for any help in advance and sorry for my ignorance. I am a professional photographer and I know when new photographers come to our forums, we might not take it lightly. We might thing, O god why re they asking that. lol.
SO, again sorry for my ignorance. Basically what I am looking for is something that is inexpensive, easy and fun to fly with my 6 year old. Here is our story.
My son purchased a Sharper Image DX-2 from his allowance. He loved it and it actually worker really well. I was shocked, being it is a Sharper Image product. Then 4 days later, he took it too high outside and it went away. It just flew up too high and got caught in the wind and never came back. Regardless of us trying to pull back on the transmitter.
So I remembered someone mentioning a return to home feature on some drones. I thought, ok, if he was going to want to play then we might want to invest in a drone that has this feature. So we did some research and found the Husband X4 H502E for $100 has this feature. We watched videos online and they all seemed like it was an easy drone to operate. Seemed pretty basic yet had some nice features that some of the more advanced drones have. So we ordered it.
It came and we followed every step to bind and set it up for light. Once it was all calibrated and ready to go, I started to play before I would allow my son to touch it. At first it hovered fine, it flew fine but drifted. So I started to play with the trim settings to try and balance it out. Then out of nowhere, the drone would not drift but shoot across the yard in one direction. No matter how hard I tried to pull the opposite direction, it still would shoot away. I did some research and some people said that wifi and other things in our neighborhood could be interfering with it. So I decided to take it to a remote location that had no homes anywhere near it, no cell towers and nothing. Just dead space. I did the setup, bind the controller to the drone and was ready to go. had 11 satellites locked on. I activated the props and before i could even start to lift the drone, it took off and flew up as high as I could see. Then just fell to the ground.
My question is, any idea why? Is is faulty or did I do something wrong?
My other questions are. We want a drone that my 6 year old can fly and is fun yet not $1000. I am not ready to invest $1000 until we see if he would be interested in doing this long term. I have no problem investing a nice drone, be it a RTF or a kit. It would be a fun bonding experience with my son to fly on the weekends. But for now, I just want to keep it under $150. Any suggestions on what to buy and what the hell I did wrong with the Husband?
For $35, I would get the Sharper Image again because it did fly great and he was able to control it. But I did want something a little more. Being I am a professional photographer, I know getting into the midrange and pro range gear, you do gain some quality. Its just frustrating because the Husband 502E got great reviews and was supposed to be easy yet advanced.
Thanks
Nick
