Wow - this is scary and pretty damn cool at the same time. It's crazy what kinds of things can be done on the cheap with the quadcopters we're building these days. I'm assuming the warehouses would have sensors tied to some kind of central computing system and each sensor would be tied to a way point. The copter would launch and fly whichever route is programmed to get to that point. They'd probably use sonar to make sure it doesn't hit anything. Then wirelessly transmit the video/photos to a web service. I'd hope it would be able to return home and dock itself onto a charger like the Roomba.
 
I read some of the other related articles and they give a lot more info. Definitely not for the home market... the intruder could just slam the door in its face and climb out the window.

Looks like they're using some proprietary technology to put it all together.

Also, cool that they use a frame around the outside of the copter to protect it.

The device, built by Ascending Technologies but with software and cameras from Secom, is a four-rotor helicopter with a small frame around the outside to help protect the rotors from damage.

If I was a robber, I would carry a ball of yarn and throw it at the copter if it was hovering above me. Get those props tangled and it's over. They need to use the beach ball method to build their protection cage.
