I may be posting duplicate messages - one went missing... started another and posted teh first came back! Deleted both.
No Birdy - he meant reset - move both sticks top right. BUT the gyros do need to rest. I wrote previous - place Syma on level surface - power on - let it rest a minute - then move both sticks top right to reset the gyros. Again - wait a minute till they settle down and then fly it.

I am hoping you solved your issues by now. But in case you didnt. here are some resolutions to stability problems. I expect all of this the same for all Syma X8 and X5 models
I leaned this because I bought an X8c a few weeks ago and have researched solutions to make sure I dont get the common issues.
Cures for Syma X5 & X8 stability issues
1. Make sure the battery connections are tight when you fit the battery. if the battery connectors are loose in flight then the receiver with lose its setting in mid flight. I had this when it was losing headless mode from time to time.
2. The flashing strength bars is indicating that the transmitter is in LOW power mode so the range will be terrible. The cure is to power off the Transmitter, press upward & hold the right side up-down trim control... and turn on the power... then push the throttle to bind to the copter. This swaps between low power and high power transmitter for countries with lower power limits.
3. Propellers
3.1 make sure all 4 propellers are in good condition and are of the same type. if you have different brand props it causes instability
3.2 make sure you have A & B props on the right motors - lots of first time flyers can get this wrong - copter wont take off but will flip itself
4. When next ready to fly,
3.1 Place the copter down on a flat area, before you turn on the copter wait 15 seconds for the gyros to get balanced out and stable, then turn on the copter and bind the transmitter
Immediately after binding (the following items dont need to happen every time you fly... only if youve experienced flight stability issues)
3.2 Push both controls to both be bottom right corner and hold there for 3 seconds and release... notice the lights on the copter flash for several seconds till you release it - dont hold too long
3.3 Push both controls to be both bottom left corner for 1 second then move them back to bottom middle - wait for the light on the copter to stop blinking.
3.4 Check all trim settign on the LCD - Press the trim buttons until all 4 trim indicators on the LCD display are just one dot in the middle of the trim indication area
3.5 Double check the transmit signal strength indicator is not flashing... if it is, go back to the step 2 above
5. When flying keep fingers well away from the two buttons at the top - accidental press of the flip is disastrous especially at low altitude
6. Dont fly when its too windy
7. I personally always fly in High mode as the Low mode is under powered for manouvering and actually more easily crashed.
8. If you dismantle the copter, make sure you dont have any power wires touching the little antenna as that will cause interference and reduce range... a lot.
9. Dont put a GoPro or any other non Syma camera on it till you are an experienced. The weight of non Syma cameras makes manouvering much harder and will result in crashing down very easily. I think its best to start without any camera.
10. If flying low and you bank hard in any direction it will lose altitude due to the angle, so be prepared to push up motor power and back off the banking rate
There might be more, but this is a pretty good list of 99% of likely problem causes.

Hello to all in the first place since I am new here, 
but thank's God for the explanation about modes 1 and 2.Just bought the X8 C and flown it only two times.Having had two Syma X5 and learnt to fly them real good I assumed that the MODE 2 which is indicated on the TX display will give the same controls on my new X8 ...lucky for me I did not try it out at home...the behaviour is just as described in the previous posts I am about to go flying now and will put MODE 1 instead!!...Will get back with the resuluts....
p.s. it was driving me mad, I thought it was a faulty TX or bad circuits....cause once you buy a Syma you're on your own apart the spare parts...

IMPORTANT: concerning the issue about the transmitter signal output allways blinking. is the following, to all do respect to those who suggest that is some kind of trick, or reasons from SYMA to improuve their sales in order to cover up flaws in their drones and other inuendos, is just paranoid. IS JUST LACK OF KNOWLEGE. I am a RC model airplaine flyier for several years. MOST TRANSMITTERS HAVE A FUNCTION THAT ALLOWS TO LOWER THE SIGNAL OUTPUT. THIS FUNCTION IS EXTRIMLY USEFULL, BUT YOU HAVE TO BE VERY CAREFULL HOW TO USE IT, WHEN AND WHY, OTHER WISE YOU ARE IN BIG TROUBLE. THIS APPLICATION IS FOR TESTING YOUR SIGNAL OUTPUT AND THE CAPACITY FOR THE RECEIVER TO RECEIVE IT. THE FIRST TIME YOU ARE GOING TO TRY YOUR QUADCOPTER, YOU MOST DO THE FOLLOING TEST IN THE FIELD WHERE YOU HAVE ENOUGH SPACE: FIRST MAKE SHURE ALL YOUR BATTERYS ARE KNEW TRANSMITTER OR FULLY CHARGED DRONE. Syma problems when I first started flying quads - were apparently not known about. Although having the Syma issues turned me towards building my own, some 18 months on - they have done nothing it seems to get real! They also buggered up the radio in an "update" If my memory is right - mine was Orange and they changed it to red and its range became less. Quadcopter101 mentioned this in one of his reviews on YT. I am planning to get old of either a dead Syma X8 or buy in the top and bottom frames and put brushless motors/ESC and either a Naze32 or CC3D FC. The idea of getting a dead Syma was looking at the possibility of using the original flight controller only for the camera as a cheapo FPV.
Other than that a decent one ( if you get lucky) well tuned X8 is a good trainer. But at the time being new and having a bad time with EverBuying and refund issues... after I found out about the mismatched mode setting - I had had enough and sold it. The guy had no issues...and later sold it to his boss and purchased a DJI Phantom 2 off eBay!
I think it better to hold a mentality that you are NOT flying Mode 1 - its just a back to front mode indicator. Which is probably what happened with a translator in China and having a 10,000 or more frames molded wrong that have to be used up!

I flown my X8 yesterday between two rain periods and must admit that in both modes it's comportement is different then the X5...One time it flies super nice and on the second lift off it's drifting on the left (trimming is suspiciouselly ineffective) which I correct with the yaw...waiting for extra battery I ordered so I could have some decent time to "tune" it .....yesterday it hovered perfectelly....quite high cca 35-40 meters altitude then a gust of wind almost took it to the trees , I was real close to the branches with the wind blowing the quad towards the trees but I managed to pull it back from the branches only just with full throttle...have that recorded on camera, I already saw my quad hanging 25 meteres high in a tree but all ended well (this time).....anyways, it's a good training tool cause I am saving for the Phantom 3 Classic, it's price has dropped a lot so in a near future hope I will forget this kind of problems....

I am having problems with getting my syma x8hw to fly properly. Every time I try to take my drone up. The drone tips to one side. How do I get it to stop tipping on take off?

When you say it "tips" do you mean it actually TILTS to one side? If so does it travel in the same direction? A quad "steers" by more power delivered to motors..ie right stick forward..it TILTS down at the front reverse and pull the right stick to the bottom and it moves backwards.... pull the stick to the right...and yes.. it tilts and moves right. Now if it TILTS right when going forward have you compensated by moving the stick to the left or if I remembers the SymaX8 has trims...I never found these useful but you can try them to see if they have any effect. These are cheap Chines clones and if you are new... dont expect a quad to lift up vertically until you have trimmed it and know how to react fast..ie if you are lifting off and it "tips right"./.. it could simply be you are also moving the stick to the right slightly .. so you have to see it happen and counter with moving the stick left... you will find that you are moving the sticks constantly to keep it balanced in flight. Let us all know how you get on....
