check that throttle goes to minimum accepted level, quadcopter is level, and rudder travel is sufficient to trigger the arming of the board. You could try assigning a switch to arm the board. If it still doesn't arm, Check all the connections
When you say upside down, do you mean, literally, the underside of the board faces up? In that case, you cannot arm, you need to either flip the board right side up, or change the orientation inside configuration. Does the green light come on when it arms?
