EET robotics student

Good day all! I'm brand spankin' new to this forum, so my apologies if I'm not familiar with all of the terminology associated with UAV's. I'm currently enrolled full time as an electronics engineering student with emphasis in robotics and mechatronics. The school I go to is planning on rolling out a UAV program within the next year or so and they needed some students to prove we already had what it takes to produce results. Our goal is to build an autonomous UAV capable of self-guided flight using ultrasonic sensors, etc through a programmable arduino.
The programming I'm pretty sure we got handled, but the build of the drone is an area I need some guidance in. I need some input from the members of this forum as far as what components we should choose for a stable, solid UAV platform. I need a good flight controller, preferably one that can accept input with open source software. I need a general idea of what size motors I should need, ESC requirements, what is a good GPS module to use, what systems are out there that offer OSD outputs such as altitude and milliamps used. I'm figuring I have about $500 to spend total, and I can source and use used parts. I don't know if it will help, but I do have an old controller from a DJI phantom 1.1.1 that's a 2.4 GHz. Don't know if these can be used with other systems.
Basically, just shoot me some ideas for a platform that is stable, solid, has GPS, and can carry a decent camera platform without struggling. Any help or input is appreciated.
